Our environment
- What will you do about Global Warming or Climate Change?
I believe there is now too much scientific evidence to ignore the fact that something is happening and will continue to happen to the earth's climate. The tougher question to answer is what realistic and meaningful actions should we take to do something about it? Every year we are pouring million of tons of carbon dioxide into our atmosphere. As background, we need to remember that every time we take a barrel of oil out of the ground (or the equivalent in coal or natural gas) and use it to make electricity, fuel our cars, heat our homes, or power our factories, we are adding to the carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. And, this is true everywhere in the world. Facing facts, the first steps we take toward solving this problem will not have a huge impact by themselves, but they will set the stage for future actions and conservation. I believe that this is all part of a comprehensive energy program that focuses on and provides meaningful incentives for conservation, improved efficiency and the development of commercially competitive alternative (green) fuel technologies.
- What is your position on Carbon credits and allowances?
Having credits that are given to companies that they can then use, trade, buy or sell depending upon how much they wish to pollute seems like the wrong way to go. This sounds like a big game where everyone ends up distorting their performance and measuring output differently. I prefer a combination of regulations that specify the level of clean air technology companies must employ coupled with meaningful tax incentives to improve performance.
